Martin Dillon Barrister
Martin has a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Auckland. He has practiced law since 2007 and achieved results in a broad range of cases.
Martin has taken on a range of civil cases, from relatively minor private disputes to large-scale litigation between multinational corporations.
He is now available for appointment as an arbitrator or mediator.
Martin deals with: negligence, professional misconduct, commercial contracts, farming and manufacturing, intellectual property, duties of care, special relationships, trusts, shareholder disputes, insurance claims, foreign judgments, appeals and arbitrations. These types of cases tend to come before the High Court and appellate courts.
Martin’s articles on legal processes and his book Civil Litigation for Non-Lawyers has helped tens of thousands of Kiwis gain access to justice.
Those resources cover several courts and tribunals that Martin no longer deals with: the Employment Relations Authority, Disputes Tribunal, Residential Tenancies Tribunal, and the Motor Vehicle Disputes Tribunal.
Since 2007 Martin Dillon has acted in a broad range of civil cases. He has represented corporations, government departments, public office-holders and private individuals. His articles and textbook on civil litigation have helped thousands of kiwis to better understand legal systems in New Zealand.
Parties involved in a dispute may prefer to avoid litigation and resolve their disputes in other ways. This can be for a variety of reasons including confidentiality, cost and speed. Alternatives to litigation are collectively known as ‘alternative dispute resolution’ or ‘ADR’ for short.
Resolutions can be achieved cheaper and faster than litigation in some cases, and the parties may agree to keep matters confidential. The confidentiality aspect of ADR can be very attractive where parties are reluctant to air their dirty laundry in open public forums such as the courts. ADR can also hold attraction for those hoping to preserve a productive relationship despite a problem. That relationship may be able to be maintained if the problem can be resolved by cooperation, whereas there might be little chance of that once an adversarial court case is filed

Community Law
At Community Law we’re proud of our history and kaupapa. Here’s an insight into who we are and why we work to improve access to justice in Aotearoa
Every Community Law Centre in New Zealand is a member of our national body, Community Law Centres o Aotearoa (CLCA). CLCA aims to:
– Represent the interests of Community Law Centres
– Provide information, networking, advocacy, communication, support and liaison services
– Assist coordination between Community Law Centres
– Facilitate and support centres to maintain high quality services
– Seek resources
– Represent centres as a collective to negotiate funding arrangements with the government
– Affirm and adhere to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi / the Treaty of Waitangi.
Recognising the Treaty principle of partnership, and because Community Law wants to provide the best service possible for Māori, we have recently changed some of the ways we work.
In 2015, CLCA constituted a new Board structure. Out of 7 board members, 3 dedicated Māori representatives are elected (1 from each of the following categories):
– Community Law Centre governance
– Community Law Centre management
– Independent.
– The Board itself then elects 2 co-chairs, one of whom must come from the 3 Māori elected positions stated above.
Community Law has a Kaitakawaenga/National Māori Coordinator, whose role is to ensure Community Law works more closely and more effectively with Māori communities, including through iwi and other Māori and community organisations.

We’re renowned for excellence, our attention to detail, and our priority on hiring the very best people. But our focus on client relationships is what really sets us apart – real people, real care, real results.

Harkness Henry has a proud history of providing excellent relationships and high quality legal advice, since 1875.
When the practices of the late Phillip Harkness and Clive Henry merged in 1945, we took on the firm’s current name. From our early beginnings in Hamilton, we added conveniently located offices in Paeroa (since 1978) and more recently in Cambridge.
Today, Harkness Henry has become one of New Zealand’s best known mid-sized law firms and a great place to build a career in law.
– Former Governor General, Justice Dame Silvia Cartwright, was a partner before her appointment to the bench.
– Her successor in the firm was the Hon. Justice Christine Grice, a judge of the High Court of New Zealand. Christine is a past president and also Executive Director of the New Zealand Law Society.
– Members of our team have consistently been elected to Waikato/Bay of Plenty and New Zealand Law Society committees.
Remarkable women have featured across our proud history and they continue to be a proud feature of our team today. You can find out more about our people here.
We enjoy an exceptional reputation throughout New Zealand, here at Harkness Henry, because of our team’s ability to meet our client’s legal needs with prompt, pragmatic and specialist advice.

Laura Findlater Law
I came to the law a bit later in life; I started University at 25 and I studied law at the University of Waikato. I graduated with First Class Honours and was the first person in my family to go University. I am Scottish and grew up in Scotland – I went to school on a wee island called Arran.
I turned 17 on my way to New Zealand and I have loved living here and feel very lucky to call Hamilton home.
I worked as a family and employment lawyer after I finished my degree, then started a family and began work with ACC when I was ready to return to work after parental leave. I loved the work at ACC; the disputes/review team I worked in was full of people who wanted to do a good job. I saw lots of examples while I worked there of ACC staff members going above and beyond, thinking laterally and using initiative. But those are the good examples, and the ones we rarely read about in the media.
I am married to Andrew, who had a significant injury a number of years ago; it was an odd time for us as a family – me working for ACC, Andrew being a client of ACC with me as his representative. I think that experience gives me a unique and helpful perspective into dealing with ACC at what can be a stressful and worrying time.
